• India backs 20 sovereign AI models under IndiaAI Mission

  On July 23, 2026, India’s IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told Parliament that the government has selected 20 “sovereign” Indian AI model projects for support under the IndiaAI Mission. The portfolio includes large language models from Sarvam AI, speech models from Gnani.ai, multilingual models from BharatGen and video generation work from Avataar AI, alongside expanded compute and skilling programmes.

• India AI summit and Delhi Declaration elevate New Delhi in global AI governance

  On March 6, 2026, Spanish‑language outlet El Economista highlighted India’s push to lead global AI governance after hosting the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi from February 16–20, 2026. The summit drew delegations from 118 countries and produced the New Delhi Declaration on AI, backed by 88 states, while showcasing India’s sovereign AI stack including IndiaAI Cloud and the Servam AI and BharatGen models. A Chilean op‑ed the same day criticized Chile’s absence from the summit and warned that Latin America risks becoming a taker of AI standards rather than a co‑author.
